February Trail Stuff: Shoes, Gear, New Content & more!
Each month I put together a little readout of new products and news going on in the world of trail running.
For the love of warmer days, please spring…just show your face to us. I sit here writing this as snow has begun to fall yet again. The temperature has dropped to the teens as February has graced us with a lot of cold, ice, and snow. I’ll be honest and say it brings my motivation to train and get outside a lot lower. Knowing that we’re just a few weeks away from the time change, I am so desperate for more light.
This month, we’ve got a new feature — Greenfield | Ultra trail runner, shoe enthusiast and 2025 Chuckanut entrant. Nick’s been working towards Chuckanut to take on a serious men’s field. He’s been a great training partner and knowledge-filled trail runner — so excited to have him pour his wisdom into this journal this month.
Coldfronts aside, we’ve got a new round up of new shoes, gear, videos, music, and all the goods for the month of February. Let’s dive into it!
Shoes:
La Sportiva Prodigio Pro
Price: $195
Available in Men’s and Women’s in one colorway each as shown above.
Nick and I both snagged a pair of this awesome technical mountain crusher. We’ve yet to log any substantial miles in the shoe, but we both had to go a full size up. This one runs small for sure. Firm but responsive foam. Very tacky and sticky grip. Fit is wide and extremely comfortable. The ankle gaiter wraps your ankle nicely and has great support. Excited to get lots of miles in this one.

Salomon S/Lab Ultra Glide
Price: $250
Available in unisex in one colorway shown above.
Nick got his hands on a seed pair of the Ultra Glides and put some hard technical efforts in to get some good test miles. Here’s his initial thoughts:
The Salomon S/Lab Ultra Glides may be the most comfortable fitting shoe I’ve tried in awhile. The foam and cush is👌🏼. It has a very generous fit, which makes me really happy to see from Salomon. It’s probably not the best shoe for speed work or shorter races since there’s isn’t much ground feel and it leans towards being a heavier shoe. But if you’re into ultra distances or like a soft foam trail shoe, don’t pass up on this shoe.

PUMA Deviate Nitro Elite Trail
Price: $230
Release: February 15th, 2025
Available in both Women’s and Men in colorway shown above.
I saw this one a TRE and I was intrigued. I’ve been seeing lots of awesome reviews from the Deviate line this past year. I got my hands on a pair and they are actually phenomenal. I have 20 miles in my pair, one of my efforts being 16 miles. This shoe is light, bouncy and fast. Not a super technical shoe with the small lugs, but enough to cruise moderate to light trails. Plenty of room for the standard to wide fit fam. First shoe in awhile where after a long run I actually had no rubbing issues. Loving this shoe big time.

New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro v9
Price: $155
Release: February 27th, 2025
Available in both Women’s and Men’s sizes. Available in three colorways per gender as shown above.
I’ve had the opportunity to get about 40 miles in these as I was sent a seed pair to test out. This shoe is an awesome step in the Hierro line. There’s added cushion, a beautiful blend of Fresh Foam to keep you going for long miles, and added lug depth to handle more trail. This is going to be a solid everyday to ultra distance option for many runners.

Price: $285 - $295
Release: February 13th, 2025
Available in both Women’s and Men’s sizes. Available in a variety of colorways per style as shown above.
The 001 has been around for a few years now, so it’s nothing new. In fact all three of these models have been out for a bit. Norda comes through though with the best color releases each season. Here’s what we are working with until we get the 005 release next month!

Music
I believe that when running, you fall into one of three categories. Podcasts, silence, or music. I thought it would be fun to share some new music that I’ve been listening to out on the trail when I don’t have a podcast playing or I’m not listening to the birds chirp in this cold PNW air. Here’s some new tunes for your runs!
February Favorites:
Ryan’s Picks:
Courier Socks
I got sent two pairs of these socks, the LoFi and HiFi and I’m loving them. Super comfortable. They have these little spheres all over the socks in strategic places to help add more cushion in those highly sensitive areas where a majority of rubbing occurs. New brand on the scene, and I think they have a lot to offer.
Available here for $29.
The North Face Summit Series FUTUREFLEECE™ LT ½-Zip
If you read my Summit Series post, you saw me mention this item I was provided by the North Face. This fleece has become my go-to top. It’s insanely lightweight, highly breathable and plenty warm for the crisp winter runs. Great on its own or a base layer!
Available online for $140.
Nick’s Picks:
Path Projects Sentinel Half Tights
Pockets, pockets, pockets. Who needs a pack anyway? Path Projects just released their highly anticipated full and half tights. I’ve got a few miles in his pair and loving the blend of comfort and function. In the running to accompany me at Chuckanut this year.
Available here for $98.
Original PEET electric shoe and boot dryer
This thing is so clutch, especially living in the Pacific Northwest. I went for a muddy and sloppy trail run over the weekend. I sprayed my shoes down with the hose and then threw them on the dryer for a few hours. Once dry, they looked fresh and felt new. This dyer is very subtle, I can’t even tell when it’s on. This was something I never knew I needed, but in these wet and cold months, I never have to worry about not being able to use my favorite pair of trail shoes because of wet conditions.
Available online here for $49.
Neversecond C30 Energy Gel - Passionfruit
Best tasting gel ever. If Jim Walmsley and Katie Schide both rock Never2 nutrition…you can’t go wrong. Pricey, but you get a delicious gel for those long efforts.
Price: $42 (12 pack)
Available online at the Feed or Never2.com (Freetrail is offering a discount of 25% off your first order!)
Closing Thoughts
I hope you enjoyed this months readout of all things trail. We’ve got some sweet new kicks to check out, trail running content to be stoked on, new podcast episodes to consume, and favorite things to share.
Keep your eyes peeled next month for the March edition.
See you out there!
